Nursing is tradionally thought of as a female profession, since nurses are caregivers and usually act as assistants to doctors and other medical professionals. This stereotype persists today, but is becoming less prevalent. It was assumed that they wouldn’t be as emotionally sensitive and nurturing as female nurses. Men are also deferred from entering the nursing profession for fear that they will be seen as unmanly, especially in this male dominated, patriarchal society. The top roles in nursing still seem to emphasize what are traditionally seen as male characteristics; leadership, dedication to work, and technical knowledge. Male nurses also tend to have more of a rapport with the doctors. There are many advantages for men entering the nursing profession. It can be a very exciting and dynamic career, particularly in hte critical care and military nursing fields. There is lots of potential for career advancement, high salaries, and the chance to be on the cutting edge of science and medical advancements. There is a wide variety of working environments, from a fast-paced general hospital ER ward, to a move community-minded and relaxed private practice. Men enjoy interacting with patients on a daily basis just as much as women do!

One of the most amazing aspects of emergency medicine is the huge range of conditions that arrive on a daily basis. No other specialty in medicine sees the variety of conditions that an emergency room physician or RN sees in a typical week. Some of the conditions that bring people to the emergency room include: car accidents, sports injuries, broken bones and cuts from accidents and falls, burn, uncontrolled bleeding, heart atttacks, chest pain, difficulty breathing, strokes, overdoses, etc. Emergency nurses must be ready to treat a wide variety of illnesses or injuries like these. There are approximately 90,000 emergency nurses in the U.S.

When you walk into an ER room the first step of the process is the triage right? The word triage means ‘to sort’ the triage process was developed on the battlefield to quickly sort large amounts of the wounded soldiers into categories, basically dead or dying, urgent and those who can wait. Triage nurses are like air traffic controllers except people are less predictable than planes. They are away from the main ER and alone with the patient, they need to be an experience nurse who possess the assessment skills to look past the story and catch the subtle clues that something threatening may be going on. The triage nurse spends just minutes with the patient , she talks to you about the reason for your visit, obtain vital signs and gather some of your information such as; medical history, medications, and allergies. Within those few minutes she/he must determine how urgently the patient needs to be seen. The ER is not a fast food restaurant, it’s not first come, first severe and get it your way. People in the process of having a heart attack, stroke, or on the verge of not breathing need attention RIGHT AWAY!!!! your headache, your sore throat, your sprained ankle etc. can wait a bit. Hospital administration think that a nurse is a nurse, being in the ER you are prioritinzing and multitasking to save lives.

I graduated from AVHS in 2005, moved to LA were i attended ACC (AMERICAN CAREER COLLEGE) i graduated as a medical assist. in 2006. My goal is to become and RN and work in the ICU or the ER. I know that an ER nurse is not someone that only provides individual stabilizing care to individuals in a crisis situation. He/she must be familiar with their facilities polices, procedures and protocols. Be able to respond timely to emergency situations. An ER nurse must not only have an open communication with the patients and their families, but also with other emergency medical professionals in order to provide and ensure proper accurate medical therapeutic intervention. Although, the work can be stressful it does have its many rewards.
